+ Cast on an odd number of sts.
Purl 1 row. (this is optional, but makes it easier and gives you a nice, smooth edge at the cast on)
Row 1 (RS): Slip 1, *knit the second stitch TBL, then knit the first stitch TFL and slip both sts from the needle together; rep from * to end.
Rep Rows 1-2.
Row 2 (WS): Slip 1, *purl the second stitch, then purl the first stitch, and slip both stitches from the needle together; rep from * to end.
+ Cast on an even number of sts.
